Crap. Ok so there is supposed to be a dir at /usr/share/zoneminder/fonts containing a file called default.zmfnt

You might want to grab that file from github and stick it there

I just had the same problem after the update. I then created a fonts directory under /usr/share/zoneminder/ and copied the default.zmfnt from github there.
Zoneminder can now be started again, but the time stamp in the monitor is displayed very large, although it is set to small in the camera source settings.

FWIW, the update 1.35.14~20201203102906-focal
got the font on its own, but yeah, the "small" is about twice as big as the old "large", which is too big.
