starter system camera, wired or wireless?

Post by cruzin »

Ive been toying with my logitech pro 9000 and got it working with zoneminder. Not got all the ins and outs figured out yet. I would like to get a outdoor camera now would like it to be under 125.00 or slightly over. If I get a wireless will it affect my wireless internet? I will have the ability to run cat5 or cat6 to the camera. Should I look for one that run poe? I will have a 120vac near the camera so would it be cheaper to go with a wall wort for power.
What would be a good camera that would meet my needs. Going to be pointed down the driveway. Would like it to be able to log on to it via internet while Im away. Needs to be good in Michigan weather, and have day night ability. Would like a not real big bullet camera.
Any suggestions out there from anyone with a simple set up. Its so confusing to try to figure out what outdoor ip cam to get.

Can anyone with a working system offer a good suggestion for a outdoor bullet cam?

With no suggestions I went ahead and ordered a Foscam fi8903 upgraded version. Hopefully I can get it to work with my simple system.

I was able to get the camera working under zoneminder. If anyone was my info the can let me know here. Really sorry that some experienced security guys did not chime in and give suggestions.

Experienced, almost master's degree level security specialist jumps in and brings new knowledge to ya all newbies (do I see you bowing? 8)):

Foscam is sometimes adequate, low budget entry level camera. Probably can't get much better with your budget. Biggest con is poor resolution. Choosing a correct camera and lens depends so much on what the camera is intended for. Foscams are ok for general surveillance "what is that moving block of pixels?". If you don't expect much, you won't be disappointed much. The price for resolution and/or night-time performance rise with the demands.

Thanks for the updates on your progress and yeah - seems like with so many people on here, there would be way more community advice / support / help but like your post, hardly no helpful info at all is ever given on here. :(
