Maximum number of cards / cameras?

Post by wowiesy »

Is there a limit to the maximum number of PCI cards / video channels that ZoneMinder (regardless of version) can handle? If using only PCI cards? PCI combination with PCI express? If using PCI cards / PCI express / USB / Ethernet?

Besides a PCI limitation (bandwidth issue) there is a maximum number of devices that the bttv driver will load. I _believe_ it's 32. It can be changed but requires your kernel to be recompiled.

Is this specific to the bttv driver? How about other drivers? Like SAA7134? How about DVR cards? I have read somewhere that Geovision doesn't work with ZoneMinder.. but are there DVR cards that have been tested to work with ZoneMinder?

The bttv limitation is 16. Tried and tested by me. :) Those chips can be split 4 ways, so that can be 64 cameras, and 3-5fps. Or 32 cameras at 10-12fps.

The saa chips can use a different driver, and I do not know the limit there. Network attached cameras are no limit.
