A workaround
I found a work around for this problem...
Initially set monitor to no alarm mode zmu -m <monitor id> -n
When the external trigger activates, cancel this using zmu -m <monitor id> -c
so on...
No idea how good this work around may be.. What is the correct solution for the problem?
