I am a newbe with ZoneMinder. I have it installed (v1.36.33) on an internet facing Ubuntu 22.04 server.
I can access the control panel.

As I don't currently have any IP cameras, can someone detail how to add a USB camera?

At least I can continue experimenting.

After thinking about this, I don't think using a USB camera locally will work with Zoneminder that is running remotely?
Am I correct with that assumption?

It needs an IP address, yes.
There's software for that. Search webcam network or similar. The first hit is usually some gateway thing - skip that - $$.

ZM can use a webcam directly, locally.

I guess I was unclear. There is software that will make a webcam (USB) visible at a designated IP address, while still usable at its host machine. The choices depend on the host OS. E.G.,
