download video fails

I'm using zoneminder/stable,now 1.34.23-1 armhf on a raspberry pi.
I can't get zm events to export or download video. it always fails. I get an empty folder from the zip file.
my camera is working fine and pushing out an rtsp stream. the evnt shows 60 frames captured. if I click the 'video' button another smaller window pops up saying 'No Video Files Found'. also the play button under the event image is greyed out. sometimes if I mess about I can get the video to play but when I try to 'generate video' I get 'Video Generation Failed!'.

You are going to have to update.

We havn't supported 1.34 for years now.
