New to docker

Just out of curiosity, I have installed Docker into my Gentoo Linux system.
I am wondering how 'thin/thick' the docker images out there are, are they a full linux distro included or are they the bare essentials to get Zoneminder running?
Am I even asking the right questions?
Also, where would I find a docker image that is up to date (relatively) and maintained.
Just curious, because I have a suitably working installation of Zoneminder in my Gentoo system so a docker image is more of a fiddle with rather than something I am going to run with...
