Upgrading OS and/or ZM Order?

Post by juanboy2k »

I searched for upgrading OS threads, and it doesn't appear that there's exactly an existing thread about this.

I have 1.32.3 ZM on 16.04.6 of Ubuntu.

Is there a post that explains the UPGRADE of the OS, to 18.04.4 (that's the release that pops up as a "New Release available" when I Login), and/or if I want to upgrade the OS first and then Update ZM to 1.34 or do I want to upgrade ZM to 1.34 first and then update the OS?

All of the docs I find keep explaining about "NEW INSTALLS" which is unsettling. And the last time i tried updating the OS I totally hosed things until I ended up starting with a fresh 1.32 INSTALL and I lost most of all my old video records.

thanks...

So ... not that any seemed to have any input here, I did find the thread to do the 1.32 to 1.34 script for ubuntu .. so I went ahead and did that for a 16.04 system. Then I upgraded to 18.04. Of course, during the OS upgrade, the "RUNNING" status indicator on the web page went to "STOPPED" as others have noted ... (it was reporting "RUNNING" before i upgraded the OS). I did update the newer php.ini in the /etc/7.2/php/appach2 location as instructed to enter the time zone, but that didn't help.

Also -- under 1.32, i didn't have any performance issues of which I was aware -- however, on upgrading to 1.34, the performance of the cameras was crazy ...

So i reduced the FPS of the cameras from 30 (on the cameras, not ZM) to 10 ... and it appears to be a bit better....

Sometimes it is best to start with a fresh OS. you can save the database and events and import them into the "new" server.

^^^ I got pretty close to getting an OS and ZM upgrade to work, but there were errors that caused me grief. Ended up reinstalling from scratch. Yes, I know it's not what you WANT to do, I know that I certainly did not want to, but in the long run you'll feel better (lots of old atrifacts will be purged).

OS first. And as noted, make backups of your ZM database and events: in an effort to "make" upgrades work I ended up getting things totally hosed, so much so that I decided to not even bother trying to update the ZM database (I'd gotten to one point where I was manually repairing the DB- I was successful, but other issues popped up and it just went down hill from there). For me I went ahead and did a fresh install of ZM: biggest hassle is that I have to recreate all my camera settings.
