Ubuntu 18.04: MySQL or MariaDB for Zoneminder

Post by ScottBouch » Sun Jan 27, 2019 10:27 am

As per the title, I'm just setting up a new install of Ubuntu 18.04 and have come to install Zoneminder.

I have the choice of MariaDB or MySQL, but don;t know which to go for.

Are there any pro's / cons to Zoneminder as to which one I go for?

Cheers, Scott.

Don't think it makes much of a difference at the moment, I think most head towards MariaDB, but that could be more a philosophy choice that features.
Production Zoneminder 1.32.3
Random Selection of Cameras (Dahua and Hikvision)
More Dev VM's than I care to count.

Mariadb seems to work better for me. Had to replace a 17 camera server a while back and went with Bionic and Mariadb. System seems to use less memory than with MySQL.

Echo the above. Migrated a server from mySQL 5.7 to MariaDB 10.1 and on to 10.3.12 on Ubuntu 18.04 and load dropped from ~1.5 to ~0.7 same camera analysing similar scenes

Not really - I simply installed the Ubuntu-bundled MariaDB (10.1 train) which took care of the MySQL - MariaDB change, then added the MariaDB PPA for the 10.3 train and upgraded.

Take a backup before you start, I'm not taking the blame if your installation breaks
