Zoneminder console STOPPED, cant start

I just got this installed and set up yesterday, but I have this message at the top of the webpage:
ZoneMinder Console - Stopped - v1.25.0
Which is odd, because I could have sworn I installed 1.26.x... At any rate, clicking on "Stopped" brings up
a small window that gives me the option to start it: choosing "Start" and clicking "Apply" seems to have no effect other than log entries like this:

Version mismatch, system is version 1.26.5, database is 1.25.0, please run zmupdate.pl to update.

I found zmupdate.pl in /usr/bin and ran it but it just returns with:

Guess you have either found a way around this or have given up. I had a problem with one of the database updates and I had to break down the zmupdate.pl into manual lumps and run them through by hand to find out which one was broken and then sort out the specific error.
