I would like to set up IP cameras at my home(four 800x600x24bit at 8FPS). I have a powerful computer at home- fast C2D CPU, 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD, nVidia 8800 series GPU. Because I have 4GB memory(and perhaps in the future I will upgrade to 8GB) I wonder is it smart to use 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04 instead of 32-bit Ubuntu 8.04? Has anybody tried ZoneMinder(and other essential programs) with 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04(or other 64-bit Linux)?

I have and it is very nice. Unfortunately, the repo versions are way out of date, and Peter doesn't make 64 bit debs. I have even offered to give him access to a 64 bit build environment. :) Yes, you can build it yourself, but that adds other future issues I don't want to fight. (Like upgrades)

One thing I'm curious about is if a 64-bit Zoneminder machine will have better performance than a 32-bit Zoneminder machine with the jpeg SIMD library (http://www.zoneminder.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6419).

I think the more memory thing would make it better no matter what.
