I chose Fedora because of being able to install ZM from RPMs.
No compiling needed...badda-boom, badda-bing.
zoneminder is already In Fedora 7

Your fix is also required for Slackware 12.0 and possibly earlier versions of Slackware as well. Thanks!

This problem is also in evidence on Slackware 12.0 Adding the 3 lines above fixed the problem without difficulty though. (The only difficulty was the stress I put myself under between the time the compile failed and I came here to check for a solution.
)

No need to patch with Slackware 11.0
