2 bttv card options ???

Post by Alan87i »

I'm running on Ubuntu 8.04
I have 2 el-cheapo 4 port 878a cards single chips.
I need help with the options file .
I have tried many different drivers but can't seem to get both cards to work properly.

dmesg bottom half of the file>>

I have it set to options bttv card=77,77
Tried putting only 1 =77 but two lines and get similar results.

I have doubled the allocated memory.
Also
3 cams on 1 card and 2 on the other.
The card with 2 cams shows 3 separate images in the same window on the top 1/3 of this window.
1 cam on the other card did but no longer stays green in modect.it will not record at all.

I am trying the same thing on the same distro but I've got two different card one of them the coaxent=(77) the other a techwell chip. do you know where two find the card=# at? not to cut in on your issue. I assume if you just use the one card you had it working fine?

Thanks for the link I tried that driver code and added a ,77 after card=77 then the rest of the line.
The tuner absent part is still there but this card doesnt have a tv tuner. Looks just like the card in the pic's on the link above.
I still have a a couple of cams go fuzzy some times for no reason and then come back clear.
Below is the complete dmesg file after changing the driver.

well I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 where did you add your options at? here's a link to my initial problem, And I send this because my dmesg says bttv0: using tuner=4 under the bttv0 description, so maybe the options were added in the wrong place and therefore weren't accepted

by the way I guess if your using two cards the tuner might have to =8, I'm not sure right now mine isn't even picking up the second card

what does it mean "can't seem to get both cards to work properly."? your dmesg look fine for me, so maybe it will be better to write what is wrong. if not, no one will help You. did You try this cards separatly?

cheers

In the second post I explained what was a few of the problems I had.
1 was 3 images on one channel . Fixed that my self 1 cam is a B&W and I had it set to gray scale. ALL cams ON a SINGLE CHIP must be set the same!!!!
The other problem that is still there is a fuzzy image that comes and goes I see small horizontal lines in the usually more the upper 1/2 of the image. this happens about once per second I get clear image then it's distorted almost like something is pulsing.
I have had at 1 time 2 of the cams hooked to a DVR and I did not see this sort of image flutter, distortion , what have you.

The other problem was after fooling with the driver I had 1 cam stop recording. Always in orange state. I deleted it and installed it as a new monitor and it seems fine.

For nasbxman's question. I remember reading somewhere that the techwell chips are not supported very well under ZM or Linux

This is the line I put in the options file for the above dmesg
( options bttv gbuffers=32 card=77 tuner=4 radio=0 coring=1 full_luma_range=1 chroma_agc=1 combfilter=1 autoload=0 triton1=0 vsfx=0)

Now since I have 2 cards I added (,77) 1 time.
Should I also change the (gbuffers=32 ) to =64. or do you put a comma ,32 again?
As mentioned tuner=4 should be tuner=8?

Thanks

Full descriptions of options can be obtained from /usr/share/doc/kernel-doc-<Kernel_version>/Documentation/video4linux/ and it will outline what is available for your kernel version. You may have to install the kernel-doc package for it to be available or there are plenty of online references as well.

Options for you card are entered in comma separated form for each option ie:

single card:
options bttv card=77 tuner=4 radio=0

two of the same card:
options bttv card=77,77 tuner=4,4 radio=0,0

The value to the farthest left is the first device, followed by the second, followed by the third if you had one, etc, etc...

Thanks
I had the frame capture rate set to 1.
Putting it at 2 got rid of most all of the flutter. But dropped the frame rate to between 1 and 2 fps
If these cards are just not worth the bother I'm looking at an 8 ch card from Blue cherry PV-149
Face it I paid 5 bucks each for these single chip cards to get a feel for the ZM program and gain the experience I have so far on the cheap.

Any thoughts on this card are welcome.
Would I get closer to 10 FPS per cam at 640x480 res

Or is the PCIe version better(pv-981). I can build a PC for 300 bucks I run it all remotely so on board video is fine and 4 gig of ram with a intel duel core should be enough?

The PCIE is still limited by the bt878's abilities so other than being able to use that buss, I don't think there is any other advantage but also keep in mind that have not ever had a chance to test that card and really I probably should as it would fit nicely in my server :o

The PV-149 is really no different from having four of your existing cards.
If you were to get the four port version, it would be like using one port on each of your existing cards.
The eight port dongle would be like using two inputs on each of your cards.
The sixteen input dongle would be same as using all four ports on each of your cards.

Performance does vary a bit by manufacturer though.
