Kernel Panic

Post by jamescollings »

Just suffered my first kernel panic..
Hunting around has led me to the /var/log/kernel/errors
Dec 22 04:08:11 zm kernel: Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address fdffffff
Dec 22 04:08:11 zm kernel: printing eip:
Dec 22 04:08:11 zm kernel: *pde = 00000000
Dec 22 04:08:11 zm kernel: Oops: 0002 [#1]
Dec 22 04:08:11 zm kernel: SMP
/var/log/kernel/warnings said
Dec 22 04:08:11 zm kernel: c01acc16
Sorry to be stupid (and having "grown up" with SysV R3 Unix back in the 90s).... but what do I do now? Where do I look next to workout the problem.

I'm running the LiveCD.

Thanks

I am fairly certain that these crashes only started once I swapped my aging WinTV card for a PV149 that I've now got.

Kernel panics are hellish to debug, and I'm no good at it. Your stacktrace seems to imply it is related to deleting a file or inode. Do you have any odd or experimental filesystem, or dodgy disk?

<i>Do you have any odd or experimental filesystem, or dodgy disk</i>
Its a vanilla install from the LiveCD, I don't think the disks are dodgy (but it is conceivable).

Since posting, I have changed lilo.conf to "force ACPI" and also to auto-reboot after a panic (30 seconds). Finally I have reduced the size of the buffers with zoneminder (incase it is memory related).

Basically, I am running on ancient hardware
- Pentium II 233MHz
- 256Mb Ram
- 2x9Gb disks (IDE salvaged from an old Sun Sparc system)
- 1x8Gb disk for swap (used to be system disk)

It is a testament to Zoneminder and the LiveCD build that this runs at all. The PV149 (from Bluecherry) is the newest and most valuable component in the rig! If I can't resolve this by NewYearsDay I'll just buy a cheap £300 Dell box and scrap my aging components.

Anyway... I'll update this thread if I find something out over the coming week.

Happy Christmas Phil... how come we're both posting on Xmas eve, eh??

Just to close this off (I hope). I ran for a few days with the modified ACPI, panic reboot and reduced buffers.. without any panics.

So I reinstated the lilo.conf file that LiveCD installed initially for me (ie: no modification to the ACPI or auto-reboot setting), and I have now been up for a further 3 days without a panic.

I guess I was running my buffers too large for the amount of memory installed on the box.
