kernel panic, process: always zm related(zma, zmc, zms etc)

Post by sergiomiguelrp »

Hi, I'm having some trouble with: zoneminder? kernel? hardware?, I don't know anymore.

Details:

BOX:P4, 512mb ram, 60GB

CAPTURE CARD: "fake" kodicom 4400r (i readed there are copies around, mine: no serial number in back face)

zm ver 1.22.3

OS debian etch

uname -a ---> 2.6.18-4-686

The box starts OK, kernel takes a long time (5 minutes aprox ) to load bttv module, but finishes ok.

When zoneminder starts, i get messages like:

bttv1: OCERR @ 0179d000,bits: HSYNC OCERR
...
bttv \"(0,1,2,3)" : the same as above but the rest of bttv's...

and never stops displaying that, with diferent @ ADDRESS, of course, and VSYNC too (as long as zm is running)

then suddenly: a kernel panic.

* I first tried with a MotherBoard featuring a VIA chipset; I saw somewhere tha chipsets are bugy with bttv an the like. I tried vsfx bttv switch but fails too.

* I changed the Mother Board to a intel 845 chipset but fails too.

* I also tried switching off the ide dma with hdparm, fails.

* Setting pci latency of the cards to 248, fails.

* Checked interrupts: no device is sharing irq with no other

* I tryed all the above alone and all thogether

* I tryed swithching the card form one pci slot to another.

*I tryed bttv\README.freeze, bttv\README.quircks, bttv\README.tweaks

*4 cameras, 4 monitors

<0>Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt

as you can see, it's tricky to see the "success" from the startup script, so i was waiting for it (despite the box already displayed it), and a minute later, another panic, but this time new information appeared: call trace.

i used modconf for the bttv module, these are the parameters i pass to it:

card=133,132,133,133 radio=0,0,0,0 pll=28,28,28,28 tuner=4,4,4,4 autoload=1 gbuffers=32 bttv_verbose=0 bttv_debug=0 irq_debug=0

AND the dmesg after starting zoneminder: the same as above but with the ugly OCERR

Try changing your options for modprobe to:
options bttv card=133,132,133,133 gbuffers=16
If that works then you can try gbuffers=32 and one by one add options as you want.

Wow, To be honest, I have never seen a kernel crash out like that on any distro.. I think it's STFW for both of us. I just have never seen it bomb out like that. Might try installing xawtv or tvtime and see if you can get the card to work with either of those or not. That way we can start eliminating the processes and see where the fault shows its ugly head. Just make sure that ZM don't start when using either.

I DID SOMETHING: it got better, but still crashes

Post by sergiomiguelrp »

one clue:

i had that card in the same box working for 2 months 24 7, but just with 2 cameras.
the place where it has been working gets hot in the afternoon (some times 36 degrees celsius, that's about 98 degrees fahrenheit), during that time the mobo was installed inside the computer case which has 3 fans (1 very close to the card), the box worked fine there.

now, i read in a v4l mail list, that ocerr means internal error, so it seems the problem is when overloading the card (maybe?), well i tryed touching all bt878 chip on the card and they where very hot. so i installed a heat sink with thermal grease to each of it, and !voila! when i started zm it didn't showed ocerr while initializing, but started showing ocerr a few minutes later, this time slower (i mean, too less ocerr messages), and this time only the third chip (bttv2), and sometimes de bttv1, not bttv3 neither bttv0. a it lasted 20 minutes running, also with a montage
window opened, and then, crash again.

all the heatsink where hot too, i'll try tomorrow with bigger heatsink and a thermal adhesive

seems like mi "fake" kodicom 4400r is the problem so, ill try that idea, and if work's, the other's that will come (if they will...) will have something to follow, and not try and mistake for 2 weeks like i did... thanks cordel

That's possible, I also use the same card but put copper sinks on it the day I got it. I started doing this when I lost one of my Hauppauge cards due to thermal trouble so it's just automatic for me now. I believe the extra heat is generated by switching the inputs on the chip. Never tested this theory though.
