Finally another release! Just in time for Zoneminder 1.23 to trump it . . .

However, there are two fixes in this which make it very worth your while to upgrade to it. The first is authentication with md5 hashes is finally working properly. The other is that the temp directory is set up properly straight out of the package, so exports should work with no extra effort.

I expect this to be the last 1.22.3 release. I'll hopefully have a 1.23.0-1 out not too long after 1.23 is formally released.

For ubuntu users: usual place ftp://ftp.northern-ridge.com.au/zoneminder for dapper, edgy, and feisty (use edgy). It also works for me on gutsy.

For debian users - I've just sent the update to the debian developer who uploads it for me so it should be in unstable in the next few days. After that it should percolate into the ubuntu repository for gutsy fairly quickly.

Good job! As a side note, what is the deal with ffmpeg support? Any way we can make this work in the deb? Or would we need a separate one (Since it requires a non-free codec) for medibuntu users...

Um, why medibuntu in particular? Is there a specific need for ffmpeg support in the medical area?

As to ffmpeg . . . once I made time to sit down and calmly look at the authentication issue, it fell into place quite easily. The whole ffmpeg thing is probably straightforward technically; I'm not sure of the legal issues. As a first step I'll probably explicitly drop ffmpeg support - hey at least it will be clear it doesn't work Then I'll look at what I need to do to do ffmpeg properly.

With 1.23.0 about to fall over the finish line, I'm unsure what I'll put into a 1.22.3 package (if anything). It would probably at most be the explicit dropping of ffmpeg.

As to a separate package for Ubuntu (or derivative), the guy who uses his Debian Developer priveliges to upload to Debian for me is also an Ubuntu MOTU (and now works for Canonical). However he seems to have disappeared right now (no response to my -9.deb mail). This will delay the appearance of the new .deb in the Debian and Ubuntu gutsy repos (sorry guys). But when he reappears I might have a chat to him about what it would take to "patch" the package in its Ubuntu form (if necessary; my preference is for everything to go in at Debian and come across. Less work for me that way).

Medibuntu is a repo. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu Since plf died, it replaced it.

Medibuntu (Multimedia, Entertainment & Distractions In Ubuntu) is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution for legal reasons (copyright, license, patent, etc).

So it has the full ffmpeg that Debian will not include. It is commonly added by people wanting restricted formats. It is also added by Easy Ubuntu and automatix. It is also in my magic Ubuntu script I so widly publish. Since is has stuff that is not in the official repos, if you have dependancies on it, you may need a "clean" version for Debian.

I noticed the northern-ridge.com.au host seemed to me down this morning. I can host a mirror on one of my servers if you'd like.

Any luck on the ffmpeg front that Lee posted? Currently on the xubuntu live CD I'm compiling Zoneminder from scratch and adding in ffmpeg. I would be interested in dropping this install-from-scratch completely and just sticking with a prepackaged version.

And, if you still aren't having any luck I know a ubuntu developer who might help get the latest build throw into the tree.

My ISP is currently changing upstream provider. It looks like the DNS records have updated ahead of the actual connection changing over. Sigh. Should be right within 24 hours.

Is that deb file for ubuntu only or is that the same for debian?

The source package is the same, the build is different (because of default packages in both systems). If you're desparate (and I ever get my ADSL connection back again ) I can provide a Debian sid build until I find out what's happened to my Debian Developer mate.

Peter, is there any way you can post the debian version of the deb file so that the debian users can go ahead and start testing it.

Also, in this new release did you fix these issues?
1. the lack of a symbolic link in /var/www/ to /usr/share/zoneminder
2. the permissions of /usr/bin/zmfix

-9.deb is currently being processed by the debian queue system. So you should see it available in the near future in unstable.

I'm still dithering about 1. I tried to fix 2. in this one and failed (Note - if you look at previous posts on that one I'm trying to avoid setting the 'sticky' bit and trying to deal with it some other way)

Peter, I'd really like to use ffmpeg with Zoneminder. Rather than reinvent the wheel, could you send me the instructions you use to build zoneminder? I'll figure out from there how to get ffmpeg working. I might even just use an old checkout of ffmpeg.

My goal is to get zoneminder to output an mpeg4 asf stream. If there is any other way to do this I'd LOVE to know. I'd even settle with letting zoneminder run without ffmpeg, and having ffmpeg stream straight from the /dev/video0 channel 0.

Peter, if you use SVN checkout 6119, that's the same date as the standard Debian Etch version of ffmpeg. That check out should compile correctly with zone minder. As you could use the Debian version for the binary, but the svn checkout 6119 as the source and headers to build zone minder against.

I would recommend the medibuntu package over an svn version. It is both cleaner, and more accessible to novice users. And it is fairly current as well.

At this stage, step one will be definitely pulling ffmpeg out. That's because someone over at debian pointed out that in the latest .deb most of the perl packages have jumped back over to /usr/local . . . 'DOH! Thus I need to get another release out pretty quickly to deal with that stuff up. And hopefully taking ffmpeg out completely will put a bit of pressure on me to get it working properly.
