Thanks in advance for you help.
I have just installed Zoneminder on a new install of Ubuntu 8.04 using Synaptic, I can get video with xawtv, but I get a broken image with Zone minder.

What happens if you chmod 777 /dev/video0 then run the zmu query?
What permissions does zmfix have?

chmod did not help

Post by Islandcoz »

Cordel,

Thanks for the suggestion, it did not work from me see below:

gwc@ubuntu-zm:~$ sudo chmod 777 /dev/video0
[sudo] password for gwc:
gwc@ubuntu-zm:~$ zmu -m 1 -q -v
Aborted

How do I check the permissions for zmfix?

I would first try changing your ZM monitor to use /dev/video0 rather than just /dev/video as I suspect that is just a symlink and only adds more complexity.

Secondly, you mention you have seen video via xawtv. ZM doesn't use just mapped video (as you can't actually look at it programmatically) so you need to check you can do frame grabs via xawtv as well. Some cards can't do the latter but this is required by ZM (or any similar application). There is a key in xawtv bound to the frame capture function but I can't recall which one offhand. I think it's listed in the help for it though.

Unfortunately, in the interim, I tried the ZMLinuxOS live cd and was able to get video from monitor one, so I told it to install. The install is not complete, because after setting up the paptitions, I was prompted to reboot, but I think my cd drive is acting up, so I have to get that fixed and start over.

So any suggestions on proceeding from here?
Should I just install the ZMLinuxOS live CD or try again with Ubunto and if so what is the recommended version?

I can afford to dedicate this machine to Zoneminder.

Thanks

Ok i am having this exact same issue, but with network cameras and on a server I don't have the liberty of swapping os on.

Posted another thread here: http://www.zoneminder.com/forums/viewto ... highlight=

need some help. Running one monitor right now.

I have spent hours and hours on this system, over and over. First it was because the version of zoneminder I upgraded too needed lib serialization, which I installed, and it didn't work still. So i reinstalled and now this.

There is a more fundamental problem than shown in this log. Check what is in your syslog.
