Newbie trying to install

Post by paulkruger »

I have to assume I want the most recent distribution.

There does not appear to be any forum section for new users to get started so I will start here.

I am having problems just finding packages to install. I am using Ubuntu 16x recent updated to latest. It is running on an Intel Atom IX.

I have tried the apt-get and while it seems to be installing I cannot find it anywhere.

I looked for distros and even though I added the package library when I search in packages for zoneminder it says not found?

Nothing in the zoneminder packages information seems to have a place to just download the package? It's all written for a linux guru not an novice.

Is there a clear set of instructions to download, install and configure zoneminder that a novice linux guy can use?

Is there a better option than Ubuntu? I have no problem wiping the HDD and starting from scratch since I am not planning on using this box for anything other than zoneminder. I actually prefer the most basic installation with GUI I can have and don't need word processors, email programs or anything of that kind. Just video system.

Any help appreciated.

There is a WIKI area with install instructions for Ubuntu:

https://wiki.zoneminder.com/Ubuntu

While the "latest" is not covered there you can use https://wiki.zoneminder.com/Ubuntu_Serv ... e_easy_way

If you want to use the development version use add-apt-repository ppa:iconnor/zoneminder-master
in lieu of add-apt-repository ppa:iconnor/zoneminder

Stick with a Ubuntu server or minimal install and run the install process from another PC via a client like Putty. The instructions are written so you can copy and paste commands into a Putty or other client window. I have done these installs from a Windows, OSX and Linux desktop. The choice is yours!

Also, there is a pre-configured setup you can download and run or install: https://wiki.zoneminder.com/Lubuntu_16. ... DVD_or_USB
