streaming over 4G

Post by vooteleaer »

Hello.
Sorry if this has beeen discussed before, but I haven't found any meaningful answer yet.
The case is as follows:
I have Raspberry with 4G connection and USB camera and I want to stream my camera into ZoneMinder.
I would prefer H.264 codec for smooth and eficcient streaming.
The only obstacle I see, is 4G dongle having dynamic IP address and closed ports.
Is this even possible and if yes, how?

Thanks in advance
V.

You might use a VPN tunnel. I use Softether but there are others. OpenVPN for example.

I successfully do that by making the system connect to a public server I own (using SSH tunnels). With that, the IP address doesn't matter, and the closed ports are no issues either. If the system isn't readily reachable, make sure it reconnects on issues (the 4G modem sometimes requires a reset), and provide a way that you not only reach zoneminder, but can also SSH in, just in case there are problems.
Works reliably, for several months now.
