Ok, this should clear up all the "Cannot write" errors:

What is still a mystery, however, is why this wasn't set automatically when you installed zoneminder.
Can you tell us where you got zoneminder from and how you installed it?

Once these errors are gone, let's re-asses. Tell us what is or is not working still.

UPDATE: so from the instructions linked in your first post, it sounds like you installed iconnor's ppa. Is that right?

I'm having the same issue as OP, if I used any other resolution than 320x240 I get the broken image icon. I'm using iconnor's ppa, zoneminder 1.30.2, this camera is working correctly in zoneminder 1.30.0.

I'm also using rtsp like OP.

In recent kernels the shmmax is set to 33554432 bytes for only 32 MB of maximum shared memory allocatable at a time, hardly enough for ZoneMinder to go above 320 x 240 x 24-bit resolution at 40 frames in the buffer if it is using the /dev/shm shared memory device, so this value needs to be increased. If you are using ZoneMinder with the memory mapped (mmap) compile time option then this doesn’t affect you.

To change the value to 128 MB temporarily during this kernel execution type (for example) :- echo 536870912 >/proc/sys/kernel/shmmax

Be sure to restart ZoneMinder after this.

I'm having the same issue as OP, if I used any other resolution than 320x240 I get the broken image icon. I'm using iconnor's ppa, zoneminder 1.30.2, this camera is working correctly in zoneminder 1.30.0.

OK, so here is what I have, after doing this:

sudo chown www-data:www-data -R /var/cache/zoneminder/temp
sudo chown www-data:www-data -R /var/cache/zoneminder/events
sudo chown www-data:www-data -R /var/cache/zoneminder/images

and then I did a reboot to make sure everything restarts cleanly.
I actually still had the resolution set at 1920 x 1080 even though it was not working before.
Now, it **does work**, even though I did not do this (does work meaning I see the camera view at 1920 x 1080)):
echo 536870912 >/proc/sys/kernel/shmmax

So all I need to test is recording.
I'll have to do that later.
Most of the errors in the log are gone, although I see a few potential issues, so I will post here.
The reboot would have been around 7:10, give or take, but I am not sure exactly when.

Recommend you lower the frame rate in your camera. 5 fps is a good frame rate for general surveillance such as a driveway.

Something else to keep an eye on is the amount of free space in your ramdisk /dev/shm. The higher the camera resolution, the more memory is consumed. You should see how full your ramdisk is in the top right of the web console, but I still prefer to just do it from the command line:

The symptoms you describe, with lower resolutions working but higher resolutions not, can be caused by a lack of space in /dev/shm.

Check for the symlinks for /zm/events, /zm/images and /zm/temp exist. This error can cause all kinds of problems.

So setting
General => Maximum FPS to 5
causes the image to have significant issues with freezing. Sometimes 10 seconds or more.
Also, I see numerous errors in the log.
When I return Maximum FPS to the default (blank), image updates are smooth, and the log is much cleaner.
I'll probably try setting up recording on the weekend.

General => Maximum FPS to 5

No, I didn't tell you to lower the framerate in ZoneMinder. I said to lower the framerate in the camera.
Read the help text associated with the max fps field by clicking the "?", leave that field empty (along with max alarm fps and analysis fps), then go to your camera's web portal, find where to set the frame rate, and then lower it to 5.

I have this same camera, i got it to work with FFMPEG but I am getting these in the log, I can view the stream and have not had a chance to play with MODECT yet.

Please check your zms logs and ensure that CGI is enabled in apache and check that the PATH_ZMS is set correctly. Make sure that ZM is actually recording. Ah, the Amcrest Quick start guide doesn't mention the direct web interface. It only mentions using www.amcrest.view and Android/iOS apps. I found it buried in the user manual chapter 5. And, it only works in Windows with IE it appears. But I was able to set the frame rate to 5 fps that way. The video looks smooth in the Zoneminder web interface now (it was also smooth at the default 30 fps, but I agree that seems excessive.)

I see a few errors in the log at startup. Not sure if they are legit or an issue with (perhaps) services not coming up in the right order. They don't seem to persist. I'll post them here:
