Is 1.30.2 the current version?

Post by tiripon »

It is not clear to me. When I go to https://launchpad.net/~iconnor/+archive ... zoneminder I can see see that 1.30.2 is available but I can't tell if it is the stable or the beta version.

When I check from the web interface of ZM it tells me that "You are running the most recent version of ZoneMinder, v1.30.0.
No update is necessary."

Should I upgrade to 1.30.2? If yes, is there an easy way to do this? (Like, for example, as easy as sudo apt-get update | sudo apt-get upgrade)

Right at the top of the page from that link it says Zoneminder Stable.

If your install is saying that 1.30.0 is the most current I would guess that your Linux Distro is Ubuntu 16.10 and you have not added the Iconnor PPA to your system.

See this if you want to upgrade: https://wiki.zoneminder.com/Common_Issu ... _to_1.30.x

Oh! sorry. I did not realize that the repository changed. I installed it not really long ago 1.30.0 directly on Ubuntu 16.10. So I thought the repo I used then was still the current one. I don't really memorize the name of the repos.
Anyway. Is it recommended to upgrade? My system is running quite smoothly. I would not want to break it by upgrading.

Actually I would downgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 as support for 16.10 will end soon with the release of 17.04 today.

Well, if you want to be the first on the block to mess up a running system, go ahead. 16.10 and 17.04 both have a nine month service life. For the long term you are better off with the LTS versions.

I am in process of "testing" 17.04 to see which version of Zoneminder is included (1.30.0 probably). Should have something published to the WIKI later today..

The iconnor PPA now has ZM 1.30.2 for Ubuntu 17.04. If you are planning to upgrade your 16.10 system, I would recommend upgrading to Ubuntu 17.04 first. Then add the PPA and do an upgrade to ZM 1.30.2. The procedure to upgrade ZM 1.30.0 to 1.30.2 for Ubuntu 16.10 should work although not tested: https://wiki.zoneminder.com/Common_Issu ... _to_1.30.x

Please note! If you have installed a Zoneminder version from the PPA and do a distribution upgrade to a newer version of Ubuntu, your installed Zoneminder version will be overwritten with the one in the Ubuntu package and may mess up the ZM database!

I initially installed it using these instructions: https://wiki.zoneminder.com/Ubuntu_Serv ... e_easy_way
So, how could I prevent my installed Zoneminder version will be overwritten with the one in the Ubuntu package? If I eventually decide to upgrade.

Thanks

If you do a release upgrade to Ubuntu 17.04 with your current system you will end up with Zoneminder 1.30.0 which is what you have now and everything should work. You might want to take a backup (dump) of your zm database just-in-case. I would recommend you install Webmin as I use it to do database backups and other maintenance tasks.

edit: I will set up 16.10 with ZM 1.30.0 then do a release upgrade to see what happens. Stay tuned...

The results of my test were successful.
I set up Ubuntu 16.10 with the stock Zoneminder 1.30.0 which is included in the Ubuntu 16.10 package per the Zoneminder WIKI https://wiki.zoneminder.com/Ubuntu_Serv ... e_easy_way
Once Zoneminder was installed I added a local camera and tested.
I then did a do-release-upgrade to go from Ubuntu 16.10 to 17.04. When the upgrade process completed I rebooted the server and checked for changes to config files and that Zoneminder was working.

With that said I would like to warn those who have installed Zoneminder 1.30.2 that they will not be so lucky. While I have not tested an upgrade to Ubuntu 17.04 with Zoneminder 1.30.2 installed, here is what you can expect:
Your Zoneminder 1.30.2 install will be overwritten by 1.30.0.
Your 1.30.2 zm database will not be changed.
You will have to add the iconnor PPA, do an "apt update", and "apt install zoneminder" to get back to Zoneminder 1.30.2.
Remember to back up your zm database just-in-case!
