Hi everyone,
I just got my first zoneminder server working. Just tuning everything now.
my silly question is, since I installed this server on an old computer in my office I no longer have a monitor to view the cameras from, except the laptop. The server only has a text console. Is there a GUI or webconsole type apt that I could put on the server that would let me show the cameras on the monitor that is hooked up to that server? If not. I could always build a small computer to do it, but I really didnt want another computer running in my house !! already got pFsense running and now this !! thanks to whom ever can help me.

You should be able to just use the web interface? That is what I use to view everything. It isn't limited only to the computer you are running zoneminder on unless that is how you configured your network. In fact by default I believe it runs over your regular webserver on port 80 so if you forward port 80 you can even access it over the internet. If you do not have a static IP then you might want to use DDNS of some sort so that you can easily access it remotely if the server's external IP changes. Also for security you might want to set up SSL/https.

Yes. Most Linux versions have a desktop you can install. You did not say but if you are running Ubuntu you can install the Lubuntu minimal desktop (use tasksel to install it) then Firefox.

There is even a pre-packaged version of Ubuntu 14.04 with Lubuntu and Zoneminder that you can install from a DVD or USB. See the WIKI if you want it.

I am running Ubuntu. I will try Lubuntu. Will post back my outcome !!

As for the port 80. That I have ok. You are right about the SSL part. I will work on that after all my tuning and figuring this all out !!

This is what I have setup for paths.

PATH_ZMS Web path to zms streaming server (?)
/zm/cgi-bin/nph-zms

PATH_MAP Path to the mapped memory files that that ZoneMinder can use (?)
/dev/shm

PATH_SOCKS Path to the various Unix domain socket files that ZoneMinder uses (?)
/var/run/zm

PATH_LOGS Path to the various logs that the ZoneMinder daemons generate (?)
/var/log/zm

PATH_SWAP Path to location for temporary swap images used in streaming (?)
/tmp/zm


What is going on here?
