Best options to access ZM remotely with Ninja

I have the port forwarded in the router and have a DNS setup, this will mostly work. Except when Private Internet Access is active on the Linux machine.

I then tried OpenVPN on my Asus router. This works, but is an extra step to start VPN on my phone to check the camera.

What is the common method people are using to access Zoneminder?

Most folks I know do a port forward.
There are folks who also use it via VPN but they are less compared to those who port forward.

I have noticed the VPN connects quicker and smoother video than the port forward.

Not sure why.
