xVision X720B - Works in VLC but not Zoneminder

I recently bought an xVision X720B camera to use with Zoneminder, but I can't get a video stream to work in Zoneminder. According to the wiki, someone got an xVision X104S and X100T working as follows:

Just choose ffmpeg as the source type and the source path is something like: rtsp://172.16.10.44/mpeg4/media.amp?resolution=640x480

But this doesn't work for me - I just get a blank screen. Putting the same path into VLC also fails. (Of course, I substituted the IP address for my camera's.)

I can get a stream working in VLC (Debian & Windows7) if I include the credentials of a user, e.g.

rtsp://<username>:<password>@<ipaddress>

but this doesn't seem to work in Zoneminder.

OS=Ubuntu 12.04 Server x86-64
Zoneminder=1.26.5

Any suggestions much appreciated.
