No "Zone Image" displayed

ZM 1.25.0 running under Ubuntu 13.04.
I can display the camera output with ZM by clicking on camera name but it never detects any motion and never flags any "events". I am unable to view and change the alarm zones since the video is not diplayed though the zone "handles" are. I must have misconfigured something. Any ideas?

Make sure your "Function" is set to "Modect"

I do indeed have "Modect" enabled.
"Mocord" behaves the same - there is no Zone Image agaist which to adjust the alarm zone and consequently (?) no alarm events ever.
Zone Alarm is not Zoning nor is it Alarming!

My zone doesn't show an image either but I applied one of the presets and motion detection works fine - only down side is it applies to the whole image.

I know my zone image exists in the path where ZM is searching, any thoughts as to why it's not reading/displaying it? Logs don't show any event when I open ZM Zones.

After much re-installing, reconfiguring and sticking pins into voodoo dolls I have now moved on to the next problem.
In case it helps anyone else the last actions recorded in my notes before seeing the video with an alarm zone overlay were:-

sudo usermod -a -G video www-data
sudo service zoneminder restart
sudo service apache2 restart
