I want to monitor my mailbox, but every car driving by goes behind it and triggers an alarm. Is there some way to set the motion detection so it needs say at least 1 second of motion in the zone before an alarm is triggered?

Yes,
In your monitor's properties, select tab Buffers and change "Alarm frame count". The higher the number, the more frames must contain movement for the event to trigger. Number to suit you depends on your fps and layout so some experimentation required.
