Hardware requirments

Hi all,
I am building a small system with 3 hikvision cameras. I am planing to use an HP Probook as the main system. I read somewhere that it requires an expansion card and thus my planned setup will not work.
If I go the Synology Route (though only 2 cameras) it can work without an expansion card. Can anyone elaborate?
