Will Zoneminder work with the Bluecherry MPEG4 or H.264 capture cards? I see that the BC-08240A has MPEG4 and MJPEG encoders onboard, I assume if Zoneminder supports this card it would record the MJPEG stream?

The MJPEG encoders will work with Zoneminder. The compressed stream(s), audio input, on-board motion detection, video / audio output will not be supported.

Great, thanks! Next question, for Zoneminder is it more CPU-efficient to use something that provides MJPEG output (such as the Bluecherry hardware compression cards) or raw output (BT878)? After reading up more on Zoneminder it looks like it needs to convert compressed video to raw in order to process before re-compressing, so would the MJPEG cards end up creating more CPU usage with Zoneminder? Is this still the case if Zoneminder is set to record only and not perform motion detection?

Zoneminder will chop up the video in single jpeg images, so the PV- series cards might be best. You would get much less CPU usage if you opt to not do motion detection with Zoneminder, as each new frame is compared to the previous frame.

Ok. Now this is probably blasphemy on this forum, but are there any suggestions of free Linux software to save and manage just the MPEG4 streams? For this particular application, a low-power system that just saves compressed video to disk will be fine, I don't plan on using any motion detection or other processing and keeping CPU usage and disk usage down is preferable.

Version 2 of our software will store the files in a .mkv extension. Continuous recordings are restarted every hour.
