3 * HikVision 4MP cameras taking too much CPU

Post by XabiX » Thu Feb 02, 2017 4:47 pm

Hello,

I have an i7 7700 with 16Gb of RAM running ZM 1.3 within Ubuntu 16.04.1. My issue is that the entire server runs at more than 60% CPU (with only 3 cameras).
Initially I wanted to detect alarms based on sub-stream like 640*360 (15fps, CBR, max bitrate 2048Kbps) and then record at max resolution 2688*1520 (15fps, VBR, 8192) but I can't seem to do so as it records at sub-sctream.

I have in ZM 3 cameras set as Monitor for with sub-streans and 3 other cameras (which are in reality the same ones with a different main stream channel) recording all the time. I couldn't figure out how to detect on sub-stream and record only then the main stream.

1/ Any idea on how to achieve this?

2/ If I put recording 2688*1520 (pretty static scene) what is recommended Bitrate (Variable), Quality (Highest) and Max Bitrate?
3/ If I put recording 1920*1080 (pretty static scene) what is recommended Bitrate (Variable), Quality (Highest) and Max Bitrate?

4/ I have set analysis and max FPS to my camera fps +1 to save ressources. Should I be enable Respect aspect ratio? They are set to 24 bits color space will I win something in changing that?

I am trying to understand why recording a stream to a SSD without analyzing or touching the video format takes that much of CPU. Initially I was thinking that the analysis would have been done in the sub-streams which would have impacted the CPU and then a basic recording function centralized through ZM to record the full frame videos.

Should I only do the analysis in ZM and ask the cameras to save directly to the SSD through NFS?

Thank you for your recommendations.

I've got an i5 3470, 12GB RAM, ZM 1.3 and 16.04. Four x 3MP cameras and one 720 camera. Less powerful computer, similar camera load. CPU averages about 25% - 30%.

The 720 camera monitors a static scene at only 2FPS, so I'll leave it out of the discussion.

The four other cameras are streaming 3MP (2048x1536) at 8FPS along with a lower 640x480 'motion detection' stream at 4FPS. The low-res sub-streams are set in ZM to Modect (motion detection and recording). The high-def 8FPS streams from the same cameras are set to Nodect (note the ' N ' ) and the frames simply reside in RAM, but are linked to the corresponding low-res, low-frame stream. If an alarm is triggered on the sub-stream, ZM will record the HD stream to the hard drive for the number of pre- and post-frames that I've specified.

Linking monitors is found in the monitor setup (click on the camera's IP address from the ZM main page). Simply highlight the sub-stream that matches the HD camera feed.

Works exceptionally well. I've found that 4FPS is more than enough for motion detection. I could probably go even lower, but I'm not stressing my CPU any at the present rate. 8FPS is fine for motion, higher is smoother, and I'm guessing that you should have enough RAM to store an adequate buffer for your HD streams at 15 FPS.

In this setup, both main- and sub-streams are recorded. I'll sometimes go back to the sub-stream event and check the metadata to tweak my motion analysis. The sub-stream events are deleted after a few days as they're of little value, and I retain the HD events a bit longer.

As for bitrates, I'm not much help, but the numbers you quoted for your setup should be more than enough.

I'd start by lowering your sub-stream frame rate to 4 or 5 FPS, and linking the HD streams but not doing any motion detection.

Let me know how it works out.

Thank you Avro125 to have shared your view. FYI I met HikVision in a conference event and I asked them. Basically what I understood is that the streams in H264 require a lot to decode and therefore with an intel graphic chip is usually not enough.

So they were recommending to install a dedicated Nvidia graphic card which should do the trick.

For me, I have configured the cameras to do the motion/even detection themselves and just record on a samba drive. Therefore ZM is almost not used, only when I want to check the cameras from on screen.

I may play a little bit by reducing the parameters but buying nice cameras to at the end not use them for their value is not ideal.

Hello,

I am adding 3 cameras (8Mb and 2 of 5Mb) and I am therefore concerned that it will fall apart.

What is strange and therefore I am wondering if my issue is not linked to something else is that when ZM is off I run at:

but when it's ON but with no cameras powered on so all cameras off it still takes a lot of CPU. Therefore I am confused and don't understand why.

Any idea of why the zmc process takes full CPU per CAM even if powered off?

Re: 3 * HikVision 4MP cameras taking too much CPU

It is trying to connect to the camera, it is a little stupid, it doesn't know you didn't power the cameras and is coded on the expectation that cameras are running 24x7, and loss of connection is bad, which for security cameras it is. Problem is it attempts connection as fast as it can, lots of times per second. Set cameras to None and start zm, you can also set MaxFPS to Cameras FPS + 1 to limit how nuts it goes.
Production Zoneminder 1.30.0 + feature-h264-videostorage
3 Cameras (Dahua and Hikvision)
More Dev VM's than I care to count.

Thanks. I have done so 25 +1 in MaxFPS but that doesn't change anything.
I have clean all the permissions issues but that didn't change anything.

I will disable the monitoring for now and will retest when the cameras on as when I opened this thread I had CPU issues with cameras on. (I am rebuilding the network and awaiting a new poe switch to repower everything).

For now the logs look cleaner but still high cpu.

Re: 3 * HikVision 4MP cameras taking too much CPU

25 FPS at that resolution will require some cpu effort to decode. And all settings other than None will be decoding.
Change camera FPS to <10 that has the greatest effect on load.

But if the camera is saving direclty on the NAS, and ZM is not doing motion detection etc.. why does ZM needs to decode the images?
I was just looking to use it to view the streams from a web page ...

Isn't there another parameter that can disable this detection without disabling the cameras otherwise I can't see them.

Merci

Because it always has, and is quite deeply embedded that it uses jpegs, eg live view is working with images. And to maintain that it always decodes.
People are working on, but nothing in master yet.

Indeed. To expand: if your camera is sending a stream in MPEG, not MJPEG, then ZM has to pick that apart into frames, so that it can do things like motion detection -- and if the encoding is dense, then that takes a lot of CPU, or it takes an FFMPEG that knows how to talk to hardware that does the decoding for it -- and can manage multiple streams simultaneously.

I have the same (or very similar) cameras to you -- mine are trendNet labeled -- and I'm running them at 720p 6fps, and I've got 12 of them going, with a resting LA around 9.

That turns out to be pretty usable in my environment.

The machine is an SC1430, which is a quad-Xeon, so that's not much more than 2 per core, which I've always been relatively comfortable.

In montage review it gets up into the high teens, sometimes breaking 20, but I rarely see it lose a frame.

Thank you guys.

I will then ensure that the ffmpeg installed by default (Ubuntu 16.04.3) has HW acceleration and if not enough I will decrease the Max FPS and the cameras while we get potentially the fact that we can use ZM just for viewing without Motion Detection.

Thanks and good week to all

Hello guys,

I just wanted to share a good news. I have changed my "config" meaning that before I was running ZM over Virtualbox on Ubuntu 16.04 and now I am running the same ZM version on a Debian 9 over Proxmox hypervisor and it works like a charm. So not sure if this is linked to the OS or the virtualization but I am much happy and I can now think of using ZM for more than occasional watching.

MERCI to the ones who tried to help and guide me!

FYI /dev/shm was filling quickly so I had to assign 4G to the VM.
Not sure if I need swap on such config so I may remove it.
