Changing Hikvision settings and updating firmware

Post by patmansf »

Not a compatibility listing.

In order to change some of the settings (such as the on screen display) or even to upgrade firmware on Hikvision IP cameras - at least for my model DS-2CD2042WD-I - you need to have their web plugin installed, and the plugin only seems to work with Internet Explorer.

I had to install and use a Windows 10 system, and then use Internet Explorer - not the default browser (whatever it's called) to install the plugin.

Then I was able to get rid of the ODS, and upgrade the firmware.

I run on OS X and linux systems, and don't have a Win 10 system readily available - I already have virtualbox installed on OS X, so I downloaded a Win 10 image for virtualbox and used it.

Rather a PITA, as the virtualbox image is 4GiB or so in size, and it's a zip file. Then it took about 5 minutes to boot up, and then another 10 or 20 minutes to figure out how to run IE and more.
