ssd + external drive configuration

i'd like to configure a laptop with internal ssd and external usb harddrive (or external usb harddrive array) to run zoneminder.
I'm aware that ssd's cannot handle write volumes (from life expectancy issues) and of course the required large volumes are too darn expensive anyway.
So I was thinking of configuring the laptop so that those directories with a lot of data traffic and data volume go to the usb.
So certainly that would include the main directory where zoneminder stores all the images should be on the usb drives. x
Are there any other directories I should move to the usb? Thx
