That might help out quite a bit. I had a cam at 10 fps and with ZM also set to 10 fps it would hang the stream and provide funky images. Leaving the ZM fps setting blank sorted it out. Ok, got the logging happening to /var/log/zoneminder/ but I just noticed that after a restart of zoneminder all the zma and zmc logs got zeroed out. Is that expected? I'd rather do the work in rsyslog to rotate those in the OS if possible.

In the Paths tab of Options I have /var/log/zoneminder defined. But all the zoneminder log entries are going to /var/log/messages. How I do get zm to log it's activity under the /var/log/zoneminder subdirectory?
