Backup and replace the libjpeg sym links located on /usr/lib and /usr/lib64 with the ones on /opt/libjpeg-turbo/lib, then reboot and see if there are any changes.

Yeah, check the load on your harddrives, with iotop or something, they tend to slow down the system and increase the load.

Also, already said, but really give a try to libjpeg-turbo.

Could you please paste the output of this command.

dmesg | grep bttv

Try removing the /etc/modprobe.d/bttv.conf part, with the new Ubuntu you don't need it anymore, that card is detected automatically.

Then follow this guide, works perfect with Ubuntu 10.10

Yeah, I was wondering this too. I'm going to buy new analog cameras and have two cards, one with bttv and another with saa7134 chips.
