In Ubuntu, just Disable GDM from the services tool. Now it will start in text mode, but you can have a gui with 'startx' at any time. You also still have all the gui tools via ssh without the overhead of running x on the server. Lee's advice is the preferable route to take if you're a Linux novice....

As others have said, memory management in Linux can seem complex to the uninitiated. There are some decent articles on it though. An oversimplified formula you can use is this: total - cached = free memory So by running `free`, you take the amounts from columns 'total' minus 'cached' and that's what...

Re: load

You can also reduce CPU load for lower-powered systems a lot by just disabling services that you don't need running. Stuff like bluetooth, hald, and ACPI that you do not need (normally, in a server you intend to run 24/7 and have it constantly checking for hardware changes). Though these seem like ...

This keeps reminding me. We should have a checklist of requirements for people completely unfamiliar with building their own systems. Maybe the wiki has plenty of sample setups that people have contributed. I know when I'm done building this latest production system I'll do a full writeup and post i...

In case it helps anyone else, here's how the above problem worked out for me. The symptoms in my case were that filters weren't being run. A check of /var/zmdc.log revealed 05/27/2008 23:27:03.079696 zmdc[22862].INF [Starting pending process, zmaudit.pl -c] 05/27/2008 23:27:03.088442 zmdc[22862].INF...

Wait, you want to use X10 cameras for perimeter security? Based on all their spam-like ads I thought those were for video taping certain bedroom related activities. Oh man.

Any info on the CPUs? I just looked into the product specs for the PowerVault and all I can say is: *drool*. Let us know how the build goes. Just remember to choose the right RAID setup for your system. I myself don't mind using any kind of disk spanning. All events are stored on their own logical d...

Please see this link for a company that offers ZM deployments:
prowessnetworks.com

That's not necessarily what you're proposing, but nevertheless it's a commercial enterprise selling a ZM based solution.

Lee, I've been reading through the forums extensively lately and you seem to be the most knowledgeable of the posters (aside from the admins of course). If you have a natural entrepreneurial inclination, I would highly suggest taking this on. In fact, it's even something I've considered. In doing so...

If you use the original flat filesystem then deleting files from directories with tens of thousands of events in will be slow. The deep filesystem available in 1.23.x is much quicker as no directory has more than a handful of other directories in. When I first read about that feature I was very exc...

Thanks for the update Coke. Like I said, the performance problem is to be expected given my hardware setup. It has nothing to do with ZoneMinder. And as for deleting all those files, after a certain point, you can't even use "rm -rf" anymore. You have to use "find" and pipe the o...

500 GB drives

You can now get a 500 GB drive for $90-$100. Just check dealnews.com. Newegg.com recently had a sale for $90 for the aforementioned drive along with an external, aluminum case.

Backup to DVD a nightmare.

Hard Drive A 500 gig drive in you case should be about a week. This will vary depending on how much motion you have and how much you capture. Right now 500 gig drives and 750 gig drives are at the sweet spot in the price point. And the backups to DVD, unless filtered for specific content, will be a...

Disk IO

In most modern pc-based servers, disk I/O is more than adequate for the speeds involved in capturing from multiple cameras in most scenarios. Disk IO has been my main bottleneck. In the test server I have running, anytime I go to delete a number of events, the deletion causes the system load to inc...

Does it matter if it's IR or not?

Wouldn't that have more to do with the physical structure of the camera's front than with whether it's IR or not? If the camera has a hood on the front then a spider would be likely to go build a web in there regardless.

Then again, I haven't had this problem so what do I know.
