Do you have it on CBR or VBR?

Regarding the sound, you might want to experiment with the compression style.

Re: Mastering ZM motion detection intricacies?

Before spending time on that, you'd probably have better luck with 1.36.xx, currently at 33 and proposed 34.
Nice post though.

Re: PC recommendations

currently 1/2 dozen cameras, but will probably add more
What are they doing?
I have 21 cams, mostly mocord no analysis on z400 workstation. z400's are cheap, especially if you don't need OS/boot drive.
I have a second z400, same cameras, with analysis, on 1.37.51.

Re: Nubie needs help setting up zoneminder

First issue, is how to assign IPs from the 192.168.1.0/24 range to the two POE cameras.
Hook them up directly to a machine and set it to the camera's range. There should be a setup page where you can set it to 192.168.1.xxx
Alsoto set either get dhcp or fixed address of your choice.

Ordinarily, port 80, assuming the default apache2 setup.

Re: just installed - getting all text with hyperlinks

You need to run the zoneminder ~package~ as root - su. It needs to be root for some of what it does.
so -

sudo su

apt install zoneminder

Re: I need help!

Sort of. What have you got for Options->Config->EVENT_CLOSE_MODE ?
And what function is the camera set to?

Re: just installed - getting all text with hyperlinks

You're missing the font file, I think.
Did you start with sudo su ? I'm guessing not.

$ sudo su
# apt install zoneminder -y
# a2enconf zoneminder
# service apache2 reload

Then I'm pretty sure it'll work OK. If not, you may have to start over.

Yeah it doesn't always do the job, unfortunately. Dunno why.
While you're at it, make sure you don't have a bunch of trash in the trash...
