Look in /var/cache/zoneminder/events

Thought I had seen this before...

In my upgrade instructions for Ubuntu 15.10 I have:

chown -R www-data:www-data /usr/share/zoneminder/

Will add this to the install instructions. Does no harm if it precludes issues...

Ah.. 1.29.0 is no longer in development. It went live on 04FEB16. Your upgrade should go without any problems.

Don't use the master PPA! 1.29.0 is in the "normal" PPA.

Sorry, I did not fully answer your question.

I would recommend your option "B" The upgrade from the PPA, I feel, is the safest way to do it. I have run the install and upgrades on various versions of Ubuntu and Zoneminder works afterwards. and with the new release you will get ZM 1.29.0!

The upgrade instructions will be tweaked sometime tomorrow. For now follow the install instructions, below the upgrade instructions but use the PPA not the master. I did a test install tonight successfully but discovered the release too late to do more. Old guys need to get sleep!

There is a write up on the WIKI where I set up Ubuntu 14.10 to run Zoneminder on systemd.
