Does the event server require that I use HTTPS SSL?

I don't think I am using either of these.
Do I have to if I want to use the event server?

I think I have it mostly installed, just wondering about the SSL requirements.

https is now required for zmNinja on android.... shouldn't be needed elsewhere, but the default config has it turned on, so you have to edit zmeventnotification.ini and turn off ssl.

I did switch to SSL and now the latest zmNinja works fine.

If I am using HTTPS do I still need to turn OFF ssl in zmeventnotification.ini? Not sure about your statement.

the ssl in zmes is for communicating with zmes over a websocket, if it's working don't break it.

The requirement for HTTPS/SSL with the event server depends on your specific setup and security needs. No, HTTPS/SSL isn't always mandatory. If the event server runs on a private network where only trusted users have access, it might be acceptable to forego HTTPS/SSL. However, this exposes your data to potential risks if the network isn't secure.
