Hello everyone, New user hoping I can get some clarification.

I want to run ZoneMinder off an older MacOS either native or in VM using linux OS. When it comes to recording I have specific requirements set by the state I need to adhere to.
1. Need 24/7 video and audio set to at least 15fps
2. audio and video needs to be archived for 1 year

Im thinking max 2 cameras 2mp. Can ZoneMinder be set up to record to external HD?

You can configure this in the Options -> Storage menu. Use the Path to enter the specific drive you want to save images to.

I also just stumbled across this very detailed explanation of how to setup external storage in the ZoneMinder Wiki.
