I tried your ISO now 3 times as a virtualbox virtual machine. I have same experience: after doing standard Ubuntu updates it breaks zoneminder with error that it cannot find libavcore.so.0 , which I think involves ffmpeg. I tried reinstalling ffmpeg but that did not help.

The error message happens after a standard Ubuntu software update in which ffmpeg has an update, here is error:

"Starting ZoneMinder: /usr/local/bin/zmfix: error while loading shared libraries: libavcore.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
failure"

I think the Ubuntu update for ffmpeg moved some libraries that the program "zmfix" uses. But that is as far as I got. I think ffmpeg needs any updates it can get for it has a history of security issues.

I hope someday zoneminder proves worthy because I have spent a potload of time trying to get it working reliably. I have the version included as a package on Ubuntu Synaptic Package Manager working OK. I want a virtualbox version. A reliable working current liveCD would be a godsend. It would be perfect to make a virtualbox guest. I also tried building the latest release, 1.24.3 on a clean Ubuntu 10.10 with no luck. I tried the install instructions for Ubuntu 10.10 with extras like the jpg graphics turbo libraries, but it wouldn't run either. I tried bluecherry and the archlinux versions too but found them wanting.

I've tried many different installs over the years and this set of instructions with an install script for Ubuntu 10.10 has been by far the best and required the least amount of tweeks.

I'm happy to share my minor tweeks/fixes if you need any.

Only thing I can suggest is installing the dvd and leaving things be (no updates) unless you are able to fix such changed brought on by the updates. All software that involves and works with zoneminder is installed from source and should still be in /usr/src if you want to poke around. Have no idea what's happening, but maybe the updates are installing ffmpeg over what I installed from source.

Sorry I couldn't be of much help. The solution works for me and many others in it's standard configuration. I use it mainly for the security functions and have a strong firewall, so most of the other software on the disk is not even being used.

Software updates are very important especially with web stuff open to the internet. I fell-back to using the zoneminder on Ubuntu's Synaptic Package Manager and it is working fairly well. I am now ironing out the bugs, copy+pasting some of the posted scripts. I'm happy with it now.

I just got this running with my Kodicom 8800 card (it just needed the modprobe entries and Video for Linux version 1 instead of 2). Is it safe to update to 1.24.4?

Thanks!
