Cannot install ZoneMinder 1.22

At the end of running ./configure I get
checking whether MD5 is declared... no
configure: error: zm requires openssl/md5.h

md5.h is there

# uname -a
Linux linux 2.6.11.4-21.10-default #1 Tue Nov 29 14:32:49 UTC 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

You should have these packages installed:
openssl
openssl-devel

To check if you have them, do:
rpm -qa | grep openssl

If one of them is missing, fetch the package for your distribution and install it.

I had made all of that. Upgraded mysql, added other modules, reinstalled ZF
it should have worked...but not immediately

I gave up for a while, installed other applications I got back to zone finder and I went beyond that point
