Just installed ZoneMinder 1.34.9 running on FreeNAS 11.3 and now chasing a good 4K 8MP *or close* ip camera that works with zm.
Checked the zm compatible list on wiki but dont seem to find any high res cameras listed.
Is there any(!) high res camera that works with zm, or...?
If I decide to install a security camera system then I want something that allow me to clearly identify what/who is captured *day and night)
Also curious to why not any(!) ip camera can be used? What is the issue really? Thought the camera simply feed what it captures back to the software and would have thought that this feed would be universal?

Any camera that works with VLC will likely work with Zoneminder. But I would ask why you need 8MP? I've put folks before a judge after being identified with a 640x480 cam running 5 FPS. This is a security system not HD video...

fastest way to test streams:
ffmpeg -i rtsp://<user>:<pass>@<ipaddress>:554/path ./output.mp4 (if terminal only)
ffplay rtsp://<user>:<pass>@<ipaddress>:554/path (gui)
find paths on ispydb or in zm hcl
