Zoneminder /dev/shm: 100%

Hi all,

I'm new to Zoneminder.
So installed Zoneminder on my Synology NAS with Docker.
Now I installed 2 camera's but need 2 more but the /dev/shm is already 100%.
shm 64M 53M 12M 83% /dev/shm
Is it possible to upgrade it so I can add more camera's?

Thanks!

If you are asking if it possible to upgrade the memory in your NAS, you should post the model number and its currently installed RAM.

As the owner of a couple of Synology boxes, I really don't believe they are suitable for use as a ZoneMinder server, especially if they are running a bunch of other applications. Synology Corp does have their own surveillance package available, which might be worth checking into. It should be tailored for the NAS's limited CPU and memory capacity.

I think you need more RAM. By default new linux distros allocate to /dev/shm half of the system ram dynamically. According to the total RAM of the system you can increase or decrease "/dev/shm" dimension.

A way to do that is to edit "/etc/fstab" file and use "mount -o remount /dev/shm" command.

In zoneminder 1.30.4 it was not mandatory using "/dev/shm".

In 1.34.x I'm not sure but I think it is.

Thanks for the fast response.

I have 16GB of ram. So it should be OK?
But is it possible to increase it and how?

Thanks!

If you are running in Docker you need to increase RAM for Docker.

Better yet, dump Docker and just install Zoneminder under the OS.

How do I increase the RAM of Docker?
Under OS, you mean to run Zoneminder under Ubuntu?

Google is your friend for your Docker questions.

Yes, without Docker.I also feel that the NAS is not powerful enough to do a decent job with Zoneminder and all the other processes you expect a NAS to do.

Do yourself a favor and use Surveillance Station if you want to run security cams on a Synology NAS. I just migrated off one a couple months ago, and couldn't be happier. But unless you have a high-end model and a working knowledge of how to circumvent their proprietary OS hacks, you will fail. The cheaper boxes have nowhere near the necessary horsepower. I imagine any successful attempt to pull this off would constitute an integration miracle on the order of near un-doable.

surveillance station works rly nice and easy, but the licences are quite expensive
i managed to reduce the /dev/dhm to 30% with 3 cams on my DS220+ with 2gb RAM.
i started another topic and documented my solutions here:

I'd be curious to see how many cameras will run on a DS220 before everything slows to a crawl.

I have Surveillance Station licenses available for half price!

Half the prize? How  ?
And is it still a thing those licences can be transferred only once?

I don't know what the xfer policy/procedure is, but I have 8, IIRC.

Next day /dev/shm is sitting at 18%, one camera keeps hanging and everything looks great with a page refresh. Not really seeing any concerning issues on this topic. Network contention? Considering all the stuff running on this box, that it works at all seems impressive to me. 8)

Final Thoughts: Yeah network contention - riiiight. That camera had the wrong NIC selected. Cannot imagine how it ever worked at all. Intermittent/soft fails suck. I've juggled things between wired/wireless for various reasons, and as usual, the only thing wrong with my system is something I did to it!
