Problems with multiple high resolution cameras

Post by robfish »

I am posting this info as it may be helpful for other "newbies" like me:-

I just installed my fourth 8 Megapixel camera but had trouble obviously overloading my Zoneminder.
The fix was to lower the resolution. I found that various combinations worked (lower res on all or have a mixture).

High res cameras require more RAM. Specifically more tmpfs. By default many Linux distros allocate half of the installed RAM for tmpfs. If you are an old school DOS person think RAM drive. Zoneminder 1.30.4 shows the space used in tmpfs or /dev/shm. Adding one more camera at high res can bring Zoneminder down. Yes, adding more RAM can help and you can also reallocate more RAM to tmpfs but this is at the peril of starving other processes, like the SQL database, of memory.

Rob, I may have a similar problem. Do you mind sharing the model and configuration you have for your cameras?

I have 2 x 1.3mp Amcrest Cameras, 1 x 3MP Amcrest Dome, 1x 2MP Hikvision Doorbell, 1 new 4K (8MP) Amcrest.

I am using FFMPEG on all of them. What is your setup for your 8MP camera? and which model do you have?

I have 3 x HikVision DS-2CD2085FWD-I IP Cameras an an old phone with IPWebcam in the garage.
The HikVision cameras default to 8 Mega pixels. I have played around a bit and now have them working fine, all on 3072x1728 (5.3 MP)

I just got mine up to 3072x2048, no errors. Thanks for the tip.

You can also lower the ring buffer and pre-event frames to lower the tmpfs used.
These settings are on the Buffers tab of the source setup link.
