Unable to probe for cameras

Hello all,
in my battle to get ZoneMinder to work and instead of trying to guess the correct settings, I am trying to make it detect connected USB webcams. Nothing fancy here, although I still wonder why ZM wouldn't simply auto-detect cameras as every other software do.
However, each time I click the "Probe" command, I am greeted with message "Unable to probe local cameras, status is '255'". What does that means?
