No image displayed when adding zones

Post by jordon » Sun Dec 18, 2011 7:41 am

Hi there. I'm rather new to ZoneMinder and I have limited experience with Linux/Apache admin but I've managed to narrow down my problem, I just need help to determine the best way to resolve it.

Here are the details:

I have a Trendnet IP-110W which is connected to my local network over wireless.
My machine is running Ubuntu 10.10
My ZoneMinder version is 1.24.2 and I compiled it from source.
I've attached a screen shot of the Zones page with the lack of the source image.

My apache error logs say this:

[Sun Dec 18 01:12:10 2011] [error] [client ::1] File does not exist: /usr/share/zoneminder/images/Zones1.jpg

I'm guessing its a permission problem but I have no idea. I looked at the permissions for /usr/share/zoneminder/images and everything seemed fine..

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks.

Hi,

Have you added a monitor before?.

Hope it helps,

I'm not quite sure if you mean if I already have a monitor added, which yes I do have my network camera added.

If that's not what you meant, could you please explain further? :)

Please, post the /var/log/syslog messages when trying to add a zone.

Sorry to bring this thread back to life but I am still having this issue. Here are the logs from the var/log/syslog:

Aug 15 19:17:03 jordon zmu[2578]: WAR [Shared data not initialised by capture daemon, some query functions may not be available or produce invalid results]
Aug 15 19:17:05 jordon zmu[2581]: WAR [Shared data not initialised by capture daemon, some query functions may not be available or produce invalid results]
Aug 15 19:17:07 jordon zmu[2583]: WAR [Shared data not initialised by capture daemon, some query functions may not be available or produce invalid results]
Aug 15 19:17:13 jordon zmu[2586]: WAR [Shared data not initialised by capture daemon, some query functions may not be available or produce invalid results]

I am trying with a different IP camera and I am able to access it from my ZM server by accessing it through the browser.

SAME PROBLEM 06Sep2013
I have been playing with ZM on my main Ubuntu server for a while waiting for an old laptop to come available so I can protect our sailing club (They keep cutting the outboard motors off the back of the rescue boats and stealing them.) I have now sourced an old Dell Lattitude D610 (designed for windows 2000!) I have loaded up L-Ubuntu which runs very quickly on this machine.

>>>>>> I have a problem on the D610, I do not see the (red tinted and later green tinted) video image when going into the Zones dialog.

TEST SETUP......
I am using Firefox on a windows machine with two tabs running to standardize the browser.

192.168.0.7 /zm / directs me to the UBUNTU server - which sees the video in the zones dialog
192.168.0.5 / zm / directs me to the L UBUNTU laptop - which fails - no image in zones dialog

I am using mjpg-streamer on both machines - both machines can happily generate image streams to port 8090 using either webcam.
BOTH ZMs can see these "Remote" streams. Clicking on the "name" LHS of ZM consle brings up a video using whichever web cam I have installed at the time.
only the laptop d610 running Lubuntu fails to display the image in the zone dialog with either web cam.

UBUNTU Server - running the Long Term Release Ubuntu 12.04
Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS
uname 3.2.0-52-generic #78-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 26 16:23:24 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
Zoneminder Version: 1.25.0-1 - vanilla install - no customization
Apache2 Version: 2.2.22-1ubuntu1

Going into the "Zones" dialog the Zones1.jpg is created
dave-ubuntu: /usr / share /zoneminder / images$ ls
Zones1.jpg

L-UBUNTU Laptop - Running the latest support code based on 13.04 (12.04 is not suported)
Ubuntu 13.04
uname Linux 610 3.8.0-27-generic #40-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jul 9 00:19:35 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux
Zoneminder Version: 1.25.0-4ubuntu1 - vanilla install - no customization
Apache2 Version: 2.2.22-6ubuntu5

Going into the Zones Dialog - Zones1.jpg is not created
root@610: / usr / share / zoneminder / images# ls
root@610: / usr / share / zoneminder / images#
Apache log
[Fri Sep 06 11:59:40 2013] [error] [client 192.168.0.7] File does not exist: / usr / share / zoneminder / images / Zones1.jpg, referer: http: // 192.168.0.5 / zm / index.php?view=zones&mid=1

I am seeing the following in the syslog
Sep 6 13:02:35 610 zmu[2634]: ERR [Can't open Zones1.jpg: Permission denied]

the directory looks like it has universal write...

root@610:/usr/share/zoneminder# ls -al
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 Feb 22 2013 images -> /var/cache/zoneminder/images

looking at the link
root@610:/var/cache/zoneminder# ls -al
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Feb 22 2013 images

The above is the same for both servers.

Puzzling - when checking what is running
UBUNTU 12.04 (good system)
root@dave-ubuntu:/var/cache/zoneminder# ps -ef | grep zm
www-data 2259 1 0 11:15 ? 00:00:06 /usr/bin/perl -wT /usr/bin/zmdc.pl startup
www-data 2382 2259 2 11:15 ? 00:02:46 /usr/bin/zmc -m 1
www-data 2387 2259 0 11:15 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/perl -wT /usr/bin/zmfilter.pl
www-data 2403 2259 0 11:15 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/perl -wT /usr/bin/zmaudit.pl -c
www-data 2433 2259 0 11:15 ? 00:00:01 /usr/bin/perl -wT /usr/bin/zmwatch.pl
www-data 2443 2259 0 11:15 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/perl -w /usr/bin/zmupdate.pl -c

UBUNTU 13.04 (failing system)
root@610:/var/cache/zoneminder# ps -ef | grep zm
www-data 1666 1 0 12:38 ? 00:00:03 /usr/bin/perl -wT /usr/bin/zmdc.pl startup
www-data 1875 1666 0 12:38 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/perl -wT /usr/bin/zmfilter.pl
www-data 1928 1666 0 12:38 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/perl -wT /usr/bin/zmaudit.pl -c
www-data 1948 1666 0 12:38 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/perl -wT /usr/bin/zmwatch.pl
www-data 2404 1666 3 12:44 ? 00:01:05 /usr/bin/zmc -m 1

so the failing system seems to be missing zmupdate daemon

No, the symlink passes all its rights through the target.

Well there's your problem. The only user who can write to that directory is root. The only group that can read (not even write!) from that directory is the root group. www-data is not (normally) a member of the root group. Fix your permissions, problem likely goes away. (I'd suggest chgroup to www-data, and giving the group write access to that directory. But that's just me. :D)

Hi - went for a very simple solution in the end as I am the only user for this and a jpg file is of no importance.

root@610:/usr/share/zoneminder/images# touch Zones1.jpg
root@610:/usr/share/zoneminder/images# chmod 777 Zones1.jpg

Job done - so it is a permissions problem somewhere -
