Connexant BT878A Chip Set-Up / ZM 1.24.2

Post by Dan.Tech »

I've got an old Packard Bell iMedia 5076, which oddly works like new with the following specs:
OS: Ubuntu 10.10
RAM: 1.5GB
Processor: Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 2.53 GHz (512K Cache, 533 MHz FSB)
Architecture: i386 (32-bit)
HDD: 80GB (IDE)
Graphics: GeForce 7600 GS (256MB)
All the peripherals connected all work correctly, and function fine without error, since my Swann DVR died after a year (just after warranty, so can't get replacement/credit/whatever) i've chosen to replace my surveillance system with zoneminder, i've installed ZoneMinder v. 1.24.2 and set up Apache, etc. (accessing remotely is fine) the other day and ordered a Connexant 8x8 BT878A Chip from camsecure product page: http://www.camsecure.co.uk/CamsecureBT878aPCICard.html
I inserted the PCI card into an available slot and fired up the computer, and as in the instruction guide, placed the following options:
options i2c-algo-bit bit_test=1
options bttv gbuffers=16 card=102,102,102,102,102,102,102,102 radio=0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0 tuner=4,4,4,4,4,4,4,4 chroma_agc=1 combfilter=2 full_luma_range=1 coring=1 autoload=0
in /etc/modprobe.d/bttv.conf and added /dev/video0 channel 0, /dev/video1 channel 0, /dev/video2 channel 0, etc. to /dev/video7 channel 0 as monitors in ZoneMinder, i've used the presets for these monitors, and i get no stream coming through any of the monitors on any of the channels/inputs (yes there are working cameras connected via BNC, i just recieve a monitor screen with no image, or a border with an image x icon. I don't know what i'm doing wrong, i've tried other options written in forums on the net but none have worked, i have tried different device formats and capture palettes too, and nothing has worked, can someone please help me get this stream working, and also tell me which format and palette i should be using, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Dan.

Try removing the /etc/modprobe.d/bttv.conf part, with the new Ubuntu you don't need it anymore, that card is detected automatically.

Then follow this guide, works perfect with Ubuntu 10.10

I've just followed that guide, with not much extra luck;

Are you sure you have a bttv card? Please post the output of "dmesg" alone.

the specs say its a bttv card, and the installation guide tells me to change the bttv.conf file so i assume its a bttv card, the product page is here: http://www.camsecure.co.uk/CamsecureBT878aPCICard.html

and the output for dmesg is:

I just had similar issue with a connextant BT878a card I used with Ubuntu. Not sure why your card is not showing up in the dmesg. What worked for me was to create a file,
/etc/modprobe.d/options.conf and add just one line: options bttv card=0

web search " bttv card list" and you will find a few sites that list each card # for each brand.

The camsecure card is supposed to be type 102.

Their documentation says to use bttv.conf with the following:
options i2c-algo-bit bit_test=1
options bttv gbuffers=32 card=102,102,102,102,102,102,102,102 tuner=0 radio=0 coring=1 full_luma_range=1 chroma_agc=1 pll=1 combfilter=1 autoload=0 triton1=0

However my dmesg shows:

It may just be a motherboard conflict, since its not recognising it at all, I will be getting some spare dells to try it on and see if it's a conflict or the card that's faulty. I will post the results when I get one, at the moment I don't have any spare computers I could use. Thank you for your help, it is much appreciated and i'll let you know the results.

Go to Linuxtracker and download a copy of "ZoneMinder 1.24.2 on Arch Linux live CD" or "ZoneMinder Live CD 1.23.3 on PCLinuxOS 2008.7", boot it (don't have to install) and see if you can configure a monitor. Lot's of 10+ Ubuntu posts with odd OS fixes, this will point to or eliminate the OS installation as the problem. RDMelin's live CD's are unbelievably useful for this type of troubleshooting. Just brought up a fat seed to help with the down bandwidth on both.

The card works fine on both Mandriva and the live CD - its definitely Ubuntu that's the problem. I'd have stuck with the Larch, but I'm aware of security issues, and the major distros seem to have better update cycles.

According to camsecure, they even suggest to install it on Ubuntu. As above, I will try out the live CD's then get back to you.

Should be able to get 250 to 300 KB/s from me alone unless space and time prevent it. Just a suggestion: consider Fedora, it is very solid (Fedora 12 following the installation steps from the wiki, "the easy way", I posted it so cut and paste is possible with all entries included, none of this "usual way" stuff). Just responded to a Fedora 14 pm so the instructions are still good. Don't know what happened to Ubuntu but sure seems to be allot of issues... Just updated Fedora (not a ZM box) from F12 to F14 with no issues at all, finally a true rolling release; I'm hooked!
