Recommendations software to turn webcams into ip cameras?

Post by jerrya » Sat Jun 25, 2011 2:00 am

I have a variety of PCs around my place running windows or linux and each either has a webcam, or could certainly support one.

But they are not the linux box that will be running zoneminder.

Are there open source / free / low cost applications out there that can take a webcam and turn it into an IP camera?

Another question on this forum asked if VLC could do that, sadly, no one ever responded to that, but that would be very nice.

Thanks,

Jerry

mjpeg-streamer does that job in linux.

There are similar free things for windows, but try to get one that does mjpeg, or if it does jpg only - get one that fetches the image on request, rather than reads a jpg off the filesystem, as repeated fetching and writing will mean you'll get half-formed pictures as it reads while it's still being written.

Sheesh. Of course. Thanks for reminding me about MJPG-streamer, I swear I used it less than six months ago at work. D'oh!

I'll still look for some windows apps, but thanks for the advice.
