I don't use Windows but my family does. I first used AntiVir in their computers but over the years it became very annoying with all its new ads so i switched all machines to AVG Free 2011, works nicely so far.

Look at ClamWin or Microsoft Security Essentials .

I run ClamWin (http://www.clamav.net/lang/en/ ) on a netbook and when I build a system for people short on funds, I use MSE. Both are free, and no ad's.

I use ZenOK Free Security software and heres a really good free anti viris program called
superantispyware but don't think the free verison runs in the background so I use both

as for my firewall it's built in the router

For winders users superantispyware and avg free together works well.
norton and most others are worthless. Believe me I fix microsoft garbage for a living.

I have a much simpler solution for you. Make 2 accounts one limited one admin. Now google hide windows xp account; hide the admin. When there logged into the limited account and want to be a admin all they do is right click the application that needs admin -> then run as --> admin : pass
Prevents almost all explotes.


Another thing i do is disabble p2p traffic i haven had a virus issues in years. As well as disable any "anti-virus".

ClamAV would be my recommendation. It is maintained by SourceFire which created and owns Snort. Many others use the snort libraries for their security software and repackage it (like McAfee). It's opensource, it's cross platform, it's free, up-to-date, and consumes low resources.

The most popular antivirus programm for MC-users are MSE、avast and comodo internet security. I use avast.

i haven had a virus issues in years. As well as disable any "anti-virus".

avast seldom if ever crashes on a stable system, I suspect you have another issue causing it.

That being said, do yourself a favor and get off of Windows... Linux, OSX, FreeBSD, ChromeOS,doesn't matter.... friends dont let friends use windows, its an admin headache.
