Re: if it were stolen?
Using crypttab and fstab and a non-secure encryption key, the mounting of the encrypted drive can be fully automated. The thief would need to be more sophisticated to figure out what was going on to access the zoneminder data. If they boot up, they won't see it because they don't know the user login...

Re: Adding new PoE camera into ZM
If the NVR is providing the POE function to your cameras, you will need to get a POE switch. Used ones are cheap on ebay.

zoneminder local access using external WAN address, loopback, nat, tomato
How do I configure my tomato router so that I can access zoneminder from a device internal to the LAN using the external WAN IP address? I believe this is what is called a NAT Loopback. Hardware: ISP router (DMZ) ---- home router ---- zoneminder I have an ISP router configured as DMZ with no port fo...

Re: how do you digitally capture AnalogHD (ie 720p) cameras?
i use to use a kodicom capture card (or was it a clone?). The compatiblility zoneminder page describes them and other cards. They are cheap on ebay. Also they require pci slot meaning you will need a tower / desktop like computer. However, a cheap laptop using standard ethernet has a much smaller fo...

Re: Recommendation for indoor WiFi restaurant cameras
I like a configuration where zoneminder is connected to a POE switch and each camera is connected to the POE switch using ethernet cable. This has some advantages such as: a) no need to run power to the camera; b) data traffic is kept off your wireless network; c) data traffic kept off your wired ro...

Recommend Wireless Cam for Fun / Not Surveillance

Re: Shared Memory Limiits
A lot of systems are coming out with SSDs instead of the physical drives (with spinning disks). Anyone know if there is still a significant benefit with using ramdisks stored in RAM versus stored in SSD? File io systems have a ton of overhead compared non-io based implementation but then software co...

Re: Shared Memory Limiits
It's the output of the df command. It shows disk space utilization. In the output you will see device /dev/shm is nearly full. Although labeled /dev/shm, I do believe this is a ramdisk and not shared memory. A ramdisk is a filesystem that resides in real memory and not on a physical disk. Processes ...

Re: Zoneminder stops randomly
My opinion here but when a system makes a monumental decision such as to shut itself down, enough information should be logged to allow the reason to be ascertained. That has been my experience working on mission critical systems. If to many (or lost) mysql connections are the cause, wouldn't that b...

Re: new functionality audit / restart when random stop occurs
So the question is - should zoneminder incorporate the above change so that it always restarts when it crashes.
Voice your opinion - I think it should be included.

Re: new functionality audit / restart when random stop occurs
Here is how to do it on linux systems using systemd as the init manager. Systemd is on many linux systems and inparticular on ubuntu 15.04 forward.. Edit file /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/zoneminder.service making a change to Restart: #Restart=on-abnormal Restart=always Now let the in...

new functionality audit / restart when random stop occurs
An occasional issue has been that zoneminder stops seemly at random times. The condition is not detected by the user unless he happens to visit the zoneminder screen. This means that the system will have been down for extended periods of time. Upon restart, zoneminder seems to be fully functioning. ...
