Re: Thinking about ways to improve my security system...
Here is a photo of an IP camera. There are two connectors shown, a RJ-45 port and a power connector. The user has two options. They can power the device through a POE Switch in which case the power connector is not used. The other option is to use a router (or non-POE switch) plus an external power ...

Re: Thinking about ways to improve my security system...
Concurring with King! You mean the router would not read the analog signal right? I was talking about when I do eventually get some IP Cameras, can they be connected to any random switch and use the 5v ethernet power? Just wondering because it didn't seem like enough power to me. It may fry the rout...

Re: How to custom settings in IP cams without Windows ?
Interesting. Didn't know a dialog could be initiated without a device having an ip address but makes sense. I wonder if that little windows program is using bootp messaging.

Re: How to custom settings in IP cams without Windows ?
Thanks for the critique! No windows here.....thats how i configured all my hikvision via linux - right out of the shipping box. I can't speak for all hikvision cameras or any other manufacturer, but why would a company go out of their way to require a special windows program to unlock their generic ...

Wire Once: Today Analog Video - Tommorro IP Camera
Just putting in this post for individuals dealing with wiring analog cameras. Installing wiring is time expensive - something that you won't want to have to redo if your upgrading later to digitial IP cameras. Analog video is usually wired using coax cable or siamese coax. The siamese version allows...

Re: Thinking about ways to improve my security system...
Analog video uses interlacing. All this relates to the AC power supply (60 hertz in USA versus 50 hertz EU) and the nature of cathode ray tube used to display the image. From this you get the NTSC US video format and PAL EU video format. In US you get 480 lines of visible resolution (and in EU you g...

Re: Thinking about ways to improve my security system...
A balum is an adapter. I believe it ups the frequency of the analog signal. It allows you to use category 5 (5e) wiring but the signal itself remains an analog signal. A wire carrying the signal cannot be connected to a router. The advantage of wiring this way are two fold. First the range is longer...

Re: How to custom settings in IP cams without Windows ?
with hikvision cameras, the camera runs a webserver. All adminstrative functions of the camera are available through the webserver. So a browser like firefox can be used to access the administrative functions of the camera. The issue is to get the network set up so that a computer can access the cam...

Re: Automatic reboot, crypted drive
sure! cron kicks off a job and reboots. The issue would seem to be how to get the drive unlocked during bootup. If your root is encrypted, then the keys need to be available somewhere such as a jump drive. If your mounting an encrypted drive (via fstab late during bootup sequence), then again the ke...

Re: Thinking about ways to improve my security system...
resolution will go way up. analog is basically 720x480 but it really is 720x240 because of interlace. regarding using old poe switches they work nice but the one i had was a bear to configure because it needed a vt100 serial terminal to configure it. If you have to wire any new analog cams, use ethe...

Shared Memory Limiits
Does hardware impose limits on the size of shared memory? I am running a Dell E6330 i7 3rd Generation box with 8gb of ram. The system,, by default, configures 4 gb of shared memory. 7 cams run just fine under 720p resolution but when I bump em up to 1080p I end up with /dev/shm showing 100% used via...

OMG - mmfpeg broke; OMG vlclib broke; Clobbered Libraries?
figures never had so much luck using ffmpeg or vlclib well sort of. Now working after loading vlc (the program) via synaptic (does it matter if its via synaptic?). Are libraries getting overwritten? Pre 1.29 zoneminder / pre 16.04 ubuntu, my hikvision 2032 cams would loose the bottom half of the ima...

1.28.x vlclib issue corrected in 1.29.x?
did vlc / zoneminder issues get fixed in 1.29.x? recall vlclib was preferred for some ip cameras because bottom half of image would be blurred. previously operational 1.28.x / vlc became inoperable sometime during the life of 1.28.x. recommended was that users use ffmpeg but if you had the blurry bo...

whichi ffmpeg? looks like its a mess in terms of forks and conflicts. Perhaps this is why old workings stuff stopped working.
